Firstfruits vs. tithe: what's the difference?
Tithe and firstfruits get used as if they mean the same thing. They do overlap, and most months they name the same gift. Each one still carries something the other leaves out.
You tithe by measure, a tenth of what comes in, whatever that turns out to be. Firstfruits is about order, giving ahead of the rent and the groceries and everything else with a claim on the same money, and giving from your best. The tithe is a tenth
If the question is how much, the traditional answer is ten percent of what comes in.
“Thus any tithe from the land, whether from the seed of the land or the fruit of the trees, belongs to the LORD; it is holy to the LORD.”

Firstfruits comes first
Firstfruits is about place in line. In a farming year it meant the first portion of the harvest, set apart before the rest of the crop came in.
“Bring the best of the firstfruits of your soil to the house of the LORD your God.”

The farmer carried that first basket to God before he knew how the season would end. We do the same when we give first, out of our best. We put God ahead of the outcome and trust Him with whatever the year brings.
Scripture names them as two gifts
When Israel renewed its covenant in Nehemiah's day, the people wrote down what they would bring. The firstfruits and the tithe appear in the same verse, as two separate gifts.
“Moreover, we will bring to the priests at the storerooms of the house of our God the firstfruits of our dough, of our grain offerings, of the fruit of all our trees, and of our new wine and oil. A tenth of our produce belongs to the Levites, so that they shall receive tithes in all the towns where we labor.”

The firstfruits went straight to the priests. The tenth went to the Levites, who then brought a tenth of it to the storerooms. Nehemiah keeps the two apart.
The temple and its storerooms are gone, and the pattern Nehemiah records still teaches us. One gift can honor both, a tenth set aside first.
One gift that honors both
For most of us the two arrive together. We give a tenth, and we give it first. When the tithe is set aside before anything else, Kingdom Cents records it as your firstfruits.

Is firstfruits your first paycheck of the year?
Some churches ask for your first paycheck in January, or your first week of pay, as a firstfruits offering. If your church does this and you give it gladly, it is a real act of worship.
Scripture does not make it a rule. Israel brought firstfruits at harvest, year after year, and no passage tells a family how full its basket had to be. You honor God with firstfruits each time you give first, in March and October as much as in January.
If a whole paycheck is more than you can give, you are not failing God. You can settle the amount with God in prayer, and give that gladly.

What firstfruits looks like on payday
Say your paycheck is $2,400. Before rent or groceries, you set aside $240. Ten percent makes it a tithe, and setting it aside before anything else makes it your firstfruits. You can count the tenth from gross or net pay, and either way the order is the same.
If a tenth isn't possible this month, you have not failed. Giving first from what you have still counts, even when it is small.

If you give online, some people schedule the gift for payday itself. If you give at church, setting the cash or check aside that same day means that on Sunday you are handing over what you already set apart.
If you freelance or earn commission, the same pattern works with each payment. When a client pays, many freelancers set aside the gift and the tax money before spending the rest.
Why the difference still matters
You can meet the tithe and still miss the firstfruits. A gift given at the end of the month, from whatever is left, can reach ten percent after the order has already slipped. Moved to the front, it becomes firstfruits again.
Firstfruits is not a down payment on a bigger return. We give the first part because we already trust God with the rest.
